A Road Accident Fund (RAF) claim is a compensation claim brought against the South African Road Accident Fund by anyone injured — or by the dependants of anyone killed — in a motor-vehicle accident caused by another driver's negligence. Claims can include past and future medical expenses, loss of earnings, general damages and loss of support.

How long does an RAF claim take to settle?

Most RAF claims settle in 18 to 36 months. The lodgement and investigation phase takes 3 to 6 months, the RAF then has 120 days to investigate before summons may be issued, and trial dates in Gauteng are currently being allocated 12 to 18 months out.
